Course Description:

This course will offer a first-hand opportunity to study the social, economic, cultural and religious effects that displacement (whether voluntary or involuntary) has particularly on disenfranchised communities. It will focus on the construction and renegotiation of people’s identities as they face migration, immigration, and displacement. Particular attention will be given to human rights as social groups face the weakening or loss of support networks (provided, for instance, by family, neighbors, religion, work place, citizenship rights, education, etc.) and what mechanisms are put in place to enable survival. Themes to be considered include working conditions, gender constructions, violence, religious discourse, race, politics, and access to education. The course will take place in Haiti (3-5 days) and the Dominican Republic (2 1/2 weeks).
