Course Description: This study abroad course will explore the political and cultural debates pertaining to the place of Muslim minority communities in contemporary Europe. Students will meet with scholars, journalists, civil liberties organizations, Muslim and Christian leaders, and politicians. Among the questions that students will consider from an ethical perspective: How have historical tensions between Muslim and non-Muslim Europeans shaped contemporary understandings of the place of Muslims in Europe? How have European countries accommodated or failed to accommodate Muslim populations economically, culturally, politically, and religiously? How do Muslims fit (or not fit) into various constructions of national and European identities?
